NANO CERIUM OXIDE APPLICATIONS
Cerium oxide nanoparticles are commonly used in the energy sector for many fuel cell functions such as in the electrolyte of solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC). Gadolinium, samarium, or platinum doped CeO2 represent useful materials for the production of solid oxide fuel cells due to CeO2 high oxygen ion conductivity at intermediate temperatures. In steel manufacturing, cerium nanoparticles can be used to remove free oxygen and sulfur by forming stable oxysulfides and by tying up unwanted trace elements like antimony and lead. They are also commonly employed to remove ultrafine diesel particle emissions like carbon.
Because CeO2 is remarkably insoluble in water and in dilute acid it is commonly used as an abrasive; in fact its nanopowder is used in the grinding/polishing of other materials. Nano CeO2 has proven to be a very efficient glass polishing agent that can be used for precision optical polishing and applied to de-colour glass. It can also be used in chemical and mechanical polishing and in the wood coating industry. It is effective to lessen and polish scratches from vehicles glass, table top edges and mirror bevels. These nanoparticles possess very good optical properties and can filter UV rays, too.
Nano CeO2 has a particularly high oxygen storage capacity that coupled with its ease of transition between trivalent and tetravalent states and its high natural abundance, makes it an excellent choice as a catalyst. The capacity of the modern automotive exhaust treatment catalysts containing CeO2 become much more effective. Nano particles of cerium oxide have also a potential biomedical interest, currently used for their special properties to store and release oxygen reversibly.
The ability to act as a catalyst by taking or releasing oxygen without getting decomposed in the combustion engine when used as fuel additive, increased its use in energy storage applications. There is a growing demand for use in applications such as energy storage products and semiconductors (as polishing agent). They are also used as catalyst converters and fuel additives in the automotive industry, as their chemical properties have an ability to mitigate the particles emission.
Promising results have also been obtained using cerium oxide nanoparticles as antioxidants in biological systems. These nanoparticles are found to be effective against pathologies associated with chronic oxidative stress and inflammation. They are well tolerated in both in vitro and in vivo biological models, which makes them well suited for applications in nano-biology and regenerative medicine. Moreover, they have biological oxidant property, which is highly preferred in the personal care products. They have been extensively employed in sunscreens, gas sensors, and cosmetic creams thanks to their catalytic properties. Researchers are exploring the anti-inflammatory properties of cerium oxide nanoparticles, too.
